Hand or foot prosthesis, esp. for trapezo-metacarpal area

The prosthesis consists of a base with a convex face on one side and a flat face on the other, the latter designed to fit onto the flat face (2) of a partially resectioned bone (1) and equipped with an anchoring screw (14). It also has a shank (15) designed to be implanted in the medullary canal (3) of a bone (4) of the hand or foot. The shank has a concave end to engage with the convex surface of the base to form a ball joint. The convex surface of the base has its centre of rotation (R) situated on the flat surface (2) of the resectioned bone (1). The flat surface of the base covers virtually the whole of the bone surface and both the base surface and screw are coated with an osseous biomaterial such as calcium hydroxyapatite. Both the base and shank of the prosthesis are made from a ceramic material such as an aluminium ceramic.
