1,231,847. Disc mills. JOHNSON & JOHNSON. 7 May, 1968 [8 May, 1967], No. 21454/ 68. Heading B2A. [Also in Division D1] Apparatus for separating wood pulp board into individual fibres for the manufacture of a loose fibrous mat which can then be used as a bonded fabric, or adhered to gauze or used alone as an absorbent medium, comprises a disc mill fed at the centre with the chopped-up board via a hopper 10, Fig. 1. One disc may be stationary, or as shown both discs 12, 13 may be counter-rotated. The disc 37 has spaced central feed openings 44, Fig. 3 and both discs may have grooved outer portions (42, 43, Fig. 2 (not shown)). Air is drawn into the mill be a blower 19, via an annular opening 17 around the mill shroud 16. Separated fibres are thus drawn out from the discs and blown in a highly turbulent air-stream along a corrugated duct 23 and deposited on a drum 27 whose surface passes over a vacuum slot 28. A flat surface may be used as an alternative to the drum. The duct feeding the drum changes from round to square configuration at A. At B the conduit is converged and at C diverged. The crosssectional area is maintained constant. The fibrous layer is removed from the drum by a doctor blade 30 and conveyed away by a conveyor 31. The fibres may be provided with a lubricating finish, e.g. oleyl imidazoline salt. |
