The surfaces of plastics mouldings are coloured by applying a thin coating of a varnish containing dispersed dye, drying the moulding, immersing the dry coated moulding in an aqueous solution at an elevated temperature of a decolorizing agent for the coloured varnish whereby the moulding surface becomes coloured under the varnish coating, and removing the varnish coating with a solvent therefor. The moulded articles may be of polyamide. The coloured pattern may be applied by hand or by. a process of printing, and any number of colours can be applied simultaneously. The colour pattern may be a picture or lettering. The varnish is preferably a cellulose ester varnish, and the preferred decolorizing agent is zinc formaldehyde sulphoxylate. The preferred solvent for removing the varnish coating, is acetone. In the example a multi-colour picture is painted on a monochrome drinking vessel. |
