A safety lock comprises coaxial shafts the innermost shaft 23 of which has a knob 22 at one end and at the other end engages eccentric members 10 to effect release of a bolt 5, the other shafts 51, 54 and 56 have end notches which engage end notches of aligned coaxial shafts 52, 55 and 57 integral with toothed wheels 19, 20, 21, the shafts 51, 54, 56 have discs 37, 38, 39 with markings determining their angular position, alternate wheels 19, 20, 21 rotate in opposite directions under the control of pawls 46, 48, 49 connected by springs, the wheels 19, 20, 21 mesh with toothed wheels 30, 31, 32 integral with discs 33, 34, 35 having notches 30, 31, 32 accommodating a projection 29 on the bolt when the combination is set by rotating the discs 37, 38, 39. A pivoted lever 16 has a projecting arm 18 which engages teeth of wheels 19, 20, 21 to maintain the combination during changing the combination the lever being pivoted by arm 11 on the member 10 which causes the bolt plate 6 to slide inwardly of the lock housing. The combination is reset by moving laterally a block 7 in a slot 8 in the plate 6, the block supports a shaft 36 on which wheels 30, 31, 32 freely rotate, the wheels 19, 20 and 21 are disengaged and the wheels 30, 31, 32 have the notches aligned. The combination is reset and the block is returned to its initial position with the toothed wheels reengaging. Alternatively the bolt plate is slidable between rotatable and longitudinally slidable plates and the bolt is operated when the bolt plate is lifted by a rotating cam and a projection on the bolt plate clears a projection in an opening in the rotatable plate and a projection on the longitudinally sliding plate engages in notches in the discs. To change the combination the bolt is released and the bolt plate and longitudinally sliding plate are held stationary by a bolt passing through holes therein and in the lock housing. The shaft supporting the toothed wheels carrying the notched discs is moved downwardly out of mesh with the other toothed wheels. The other discs are housed in the knob which has a longitudinal slot for a slide with a projection which is selectively engaged with a lug on each discs to set the combination.
