[Also in Division F4] A method of manufacturing an exchanger packing intended for the exchange of heat and/or moisture between two fluids at least one of which is a gas and which packing is composed of layers of asbestos fibre which bear against one another at mutually spaced places and form therebetween passageways open from end to end and extending through the packing and the strength of which layers is increased by one or more inorganic substances, is characterized in that the substance is, or the substances are, heated to a temperature which is higher than the critical temperature of the asbestos so that the substance or substances forms or form a reinforcing skeleton for the layers, after cooling. The packings may be formed by forming some of the layers with corrugations or protuberances and joining them to similar and/or plain layers by a binding agent, e.g. water-glass. In one embodiment a plain layer and a corrugated layer are joined and the assembly so formed coiled. The inorganic substance or substances used are preferably applied to the asbestos layers in an aqueous solution or dispersion. In one embodiment aluminium chloride and sodium silicate, which are soluble in water, and which together form an insoluble deposit, of aluminium silicate, are applied to the asbestos layers and heated to a temperature of 800- 1100‹ C. which melts the deposit to give a melt of aluminium and silicon oxide. In a second embodiment a dispersion of a refractory cement, e.g. Silicit, slurried in water is applied to the layers and after evaporation of the liquid and heating to about 1000‹ C. the cement forms a thin coating on the asbestos fibres. The packings produced by the method of the invention are heat resistant and non-hygroscopic and may be used in cooling towers or gas turbines. |
