The service life of the carbide dies used for synthetic diamond manufacture is increased by addition of refractory metal powders. The powders flow into the cavities caused by erosion and are compressed and welded at the high pressure and temperature prevailing during diamond or boron nitride synthesis. The powder may be from the following groups: Ni, Fe, Co, Mn, Mo, Ti, Ta, W, Cr, Nb, Rh, which may be added individually or together.
