1,242,452. Concentric-tube heat exchangers. SUNDS A.B. 18 July, 1968 [19 July, 1967], No. 34305/68. Heading F4S. A liquid such as viscose is heated or cooled as it passes through the casing 1 of a heat exchanger, from an inlet 2 to an outlet 32 thereof, and over radially-spaced, hollow, annular, heating or cooling elements 3, 4, 5 within the casing, the liquid being agitated by stirrer arms 23, 24, 25 moved through the annular spaces between adjacent elements by a motor driven shaft 33. An additional hollow heating or cooling element 7 may surround the casing 1. Each element shown contains a helically wound tube 8-11, the flow path for the heating or cooling fluid through the hollow elements (from supply pipe 12 and connection tubes 13-16) being by way of these tubes, and the return path to outlet tube 21 being constituted by the helical spaces between the turns of the helical tubes. In a modification (Figs. 3, 4) baffles (38) define the fluid flow path within the elements, the return flow path being by way of tubes (39) extending axially through the elements. The stirrer arms may reciprocate slightly in the axial direction, and may be adjustable in relation to the heat exchange surface; or they may be kept pressed against said surface. |
