Uranium hexafluoride is economically produced by electrolysing a uranium cpd. (pref. UF4) in an electrolyte contg. hydrofluoric acid in a suitable electrochemical cell. The UF6 formed by the electrolysis is carried out from the electrolyte by the gas stream (consisting mainly of H2 and volatilized HF) and recovered from it in a condenser. The process is carried out at ambient temp. and pressure; this is a great advantage from the technical standpoint. The absence of fluorine and water alleviates corrosion problems. Hydrofluoric acid is less expensive than F2 used in the known processes. |
