CaC2 is improved by treating molten CaCl2, with gas yield >270 l. C2H2/kg. carbide in reaction with water, with 3-45% 10:90 to 70-30 mixt. by wt. of quick lime and fluorspar with granulation 20 mm. and 5wt.% water content (adhering water and water of crystallisation), then allowing melt to cool and crushing solidified CaC2. Product is much more effective than usual in desulphurisation of molten metals, esp. Fe, and does not necessitate adaptation of normal treatment process.
