1376523 Truing metal wheels; angular bending DUNLOP Ltd 1 May 1972 [3 May 1971] 20076/72 Headings B3A and B3E A method of truing a metal wheel having a disc portion 12 and a rim 11 comprises bringing a first gripping device comprised of a die 38 into engagement with the disc 12 and a coaxial second gripping comprised of dies 9, 13 in combination with blocks 19 device into engagement with the rim 11, the devices being arranged coaxially so that the disc and rim take up coaxial relationship and then axially displacing the gripping devices relative to one another first in one direction and then in the opposite direction so as to cause permanent deformation of the wheel. The wheel portions remain substantially coaxial as a result of the deformation applied. The wheel is placed on a plate 31 whereupon an upper plate 37 is driven downwardly and a jack 33 drives fingers 32 through holes 30 in the disc 12, thereby centering the wheel relative to the apparatus. The rim is brought on to the support die 9 and the arcuate blocks 19 are brought into engagement with a reference die 8 by jacks 25. The upper die 13 is then moved into contact with the upper edge of the rim thereby also centering a floating table 23. There is planishing and truing of the wheel portions engaged between the blocks 19 and the dies 9, 13. The plate 31 is moved upwardly so as to distort the disc 12 relative to the rim 11 beyond its elastic limit and then the disc is forced downwards stretching it beyond its elastic limit. The die 13 and the plate 37 are then moved vertically upwards and the blocks 19 retracted. The plate 31 is raised to bring the lower edge of the rim above the level of ejection plates 26, which are then advanced to the centre of the apparatus. The plate 31 is lowered, allowing the wheel to rest on the plates 26 and it is ejected by an arm 41. |
