The coatings with a precious metal appearance are formed by applying a catalyst soln., e.g. a base metal salt soln., esp. 3-8 g SnCl2 in 5 l pure water or an aq. ZnSO4 soln., onto the degreased surface to be treated, followed by spraying on of an Ag soln. and then coating metallised surface with a protective, esp. 2-component lacquer, opt. contg. pigments imparting Au shade. Ag-plated article may also be Cu-plated. Process enables cheap prodn. of decorative articles, e.g. ash-trays.
