[Also in Division F2] An actuator for hydraulic brake apparatus, or forming part of a brake master cylinder (see Division F2), comprises a bellows having a sidewall with convolutions or corrugations which tend to flatten out as the bellows is extended. As shown, a cup 60 made from plasticallydeformable material such as annealed berylliumcopper alloy of wall thickness 0À003 inch, Fig. 12, is formed into a bellows by introducing into it a plurality of semi-rigid plastic discs 67, having rounded edges, temporarily located on a mandrel 160. A radially - compressive forming force is now applied to the outside of the cup at the region between the two right-most discs 67 to produce a corrugation. The force may be provided by a flexible band, which is applied as the cup is rotated about its axis. This process is repeated between successive pairs of adjacent discs 67, and beyond the left-most one, until the stage shown in Fig. 14 is reached. Smaller axial wrinkles 72, Fig. 14, are also produced by this process. The mandrel 160 is now removed, and the outside of the bellows is sprayed with a layer 74 of plasticized elastomeric material such as natural rubber or neoprene. This kind of bellows is intended to form part of a brake actuator. A bellows intended to form part of a brake master cylinder, or part of an actuator, is shown in Fig. 26. It is made by arranging a plurality of forming rings 166, Fig. 23, around the outside; the rings may each be in two sections, and have circumferentially-spaced ridges on their inner surfaces to help form the wrinkles 72. An outwards radial force is applied between the first and second rings, Fig. 23, to produce an annular ridge 68b, and this process is repeated between successive pairs of rings. Then, elastomeric material 74b is applied to the inner surface of the bellows to fill the ridge portions 68b, Fig. 26.</p>
