Low-density, mechanically strong, refractory bodies are produced by mixing pulverulent ash obtd. during the mfr. of metallic Si, SiC or ferrosilicon in an electric furnace, with CaO and water; stirring and heating the mixt. to effect gelling; removing water and moulding the gel under pressure; and subjecting the body to a hydrothermal synthesis in an autoclave. Ash not utilised can be used instead of expensive high-purity silica normally used for the prodn. of calcium silicate having the fibrous xonotlite structure. |
