Electronic fouling indicator (10) for electrostatic filters. With the aid of a scattered-light source (18) and via a photoresistor (17), a signal lamp (16) of a sweep oscillator (sweep generator, relaxation generator) (12) is triggered. The latter perceives a change, caused by fouling, in the reflection behaviour of the counterelectrodes (23) and converts it into flashing light pulses, the flashing frequency increasing with an increase in fouling. In order to compensate for the tolerances of the various electronic components, the photoresistor (17) is rotated about its longitudinal axis, and the angle (31) or the distance (29) of the signal lamp (16) and/or the angle (32) or the distance (30) of the photoresistor with respect to the measuring region are varied. The use of apertures (21) of various diameters or of adjustable apertures (22) is likewise envisaged. For the purpose of self-cleaning of the fouling indicator, there is assigned to a pull-out deposition electrode a broom (28) which can be pulled past the sweep generator. <IMAGE>
