Previously, potentially short lived conductor stripes have been tested for by detecting the third harmonic of a signal applied to the stripe. The apparatus required is however complex. In the disclosed method of the invention the conductor 14 is fed with a signal via an AC coupling network 12, the signal being such that the average current through the conductor is zero. Average voltage 13 across the conductor indicates the degree of nonlinearity of resistance in the conductor 14 and relates to expected life thereof.
