What is described is a soot filter for the purification of exhaust gas in internal-combustion engines, in which a layer of wavy or folded material is wound or stacked alternately with a layer of plane filter material to form a wound body or a bundle. The layer of wavy or folded material is formed from sheet steel through which the exhaust gas does not flow. Webs (13, 15) extending transversely at intervals are arranged respectively along a trough (11), open on one side, of the wave or fold of the sheet steel and, furthermore, along the adjacent crest (12), open on the other side, of the wave or fold of the sheet steel. <IMAGE>
