It has been possible hitherto, depending on the design, to use ironing presses either for the large-area ironing of articles of clothing, with a continuous design of the pressing table, or for the ironing of particular part regions of articles of clothing (for example, for the simultaneous ironing of both trouser legs), with a split design of the pressing table. The new ironing press is to allow an economical use, irrespective of whether large areas or particular part regions of articles of clothing are to be ironed. For this purpose, the ironing press is equipped with a split pressing table, the pressing-table parts of which can be moved relative to one another. When the pressing-table parts are in the moved-together state, all the benefits of a conventional ironing press can be utilised; when they are in the moved-apart state, articles of clothing can be inserted into the ironing press in such a way that only specific part regions can be ironed. The variable arrangement of the pressing-table parts of the new ironing press makes it possible for ironing presses to be preceded by the finishes used in the clothing industry, in order to pretreat appropriately part regions of articles of clothing which present smoothing problems (for example, button strips and collars of blouses).
