The invention relates to novel sulfone compounds of formula I (I) wherein R1 is an unsubstituted or substituted phenyl or naphthyl radical, R2 is hydrogen or the radical of the formula R3 and R4 are -CN or -COOR5, in which R5 is C1-C4 alkyl, with the proviso that, if R2 is the radical of the formula R3 and R4 in formula I may be identical or different. The compounds of the invention are valuable intermediates for the preparation of fluorescent whitening agents of the stilbene series.
