The longitudinal movement, in particular the downward-directed movements of rotary tubes, rotary furnaces (kilns), drying drums and the like, has been induced hitherto by means of graphite blocks pressed, with the aid of special lever and pressing devices, against the running-roller faces engaging on the running rings of the rotary tube. However, this does not permit a uniform, time-controlled longitudinal movement of the rotary tube and entails comparatively high costs and material expenditure. According to the invention, however, the longitudinal movement, in particular the downward-directed movement of the rotary tube, is effected and maintained in a simple way by continuously applying graphite powder as sliding medium to the contact faces between the running ring and the running roller.
