In the case of an oil or gas burner, according to the invention a cylindrical elongated combustion chamber made of ceramic-fibre insulating-panel material is proposed, at one end face of which the burner nozzle (33) is located and the other end face of which is closed, the combustion chamber (20) having, in the region of the closed end face (34), laterally a passage (35) in the form of a connecting branch which is connected to an afterburning chamber (4). The afterburning chamber is preferably the flue-gas afterburning chamber of a solid-fuel furnace (1) which is located in a tandem arrangement with respect to the oil or gas burner (15). This results in combustion operation which is very low in harmful substances, with the aid of simple means. In particular, the oil or gas burner can have many uses (Figure 2). <IMAGE>
