A mat (2) suitable for slip prevention on icy surfaces eliminates the use of salt and comprises a central reinforcement layer (10) of mesh, fibre or cloth which may be of polyester or other natural, plastic, mineral or metal fibres. On both sides of the reinforcement (10) is a layer (9a, 9b) of a closed cell plastic, pref. PVC, foam. The mat (10) has rows of square holes (4) penetrating from one face to the other and forming cross bars (6, 8) across both directions of the mat (2). The upper faces (14) of the cross bars (6, 8) are covered in particles (10) of a slip preventing material e.g. plastic granules or quartz sand. USE/ADVANTAGE - The mat is used om footpaths in winter to prevent pedestrian slips and eliminates use of salt or gravel.
