The present invention relates to a gas mixture for filling biological-tissue equivalent proportional counters as well as a proportional counter filled with this gas mixture. The object of the invention is to develop a biological-tissue equivalent gas mixture which has high gain and is stable over time. This object is achieved using a gas mixture (7) comprising approximately between 3 and 4% by weight of nitrogen, between 46 and 66% by weight of propane and between 30 and 50% by weight of a mixture comprising approximately between 5 and 80% by weight of CO2 and between 20 and 95% by weight of argon.
