PURPOSE:To protect a waveguide substrate against mechanical impact without generating the danger of disconnection of bonding wires and short circuiting of wires from each other by forming both flank parts of a channel type case formed between electrodes and external terminals in such a manner as to be made flush with the surface part of the waveguide substrate formed with the electrodes. CONSTITUTION:End face blocks 12 are adhered to both ends of the front surface of the waveguide substrate 10. Optical waveguides 14 and the electrodes 16 are formed on the waveguide substrate 10. The waveguide substrate 10 adhered with the end face blocks 12 is housed in the channel type case 20 for the purpose of protecting the substrate. The part between the electrodes 16 and the external terminals 30 are made flush with the front surface part of the waveguide substrate 10. Then, no obstructions exist at all and, therefore, linear connection of both by a bonding device is easily executable. The linearly connected bonding wires are stable and the disconnection of the wires or the shorting of the wires from each other does not arise. |
