PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a thick-wall glassy carbon excellent in machinability by impregnating a sheet formed from a prescribed amount of organic fibers with a thermosetting resin, heating and contact bonding the sheet, reimpregnating the resultant green compact with the thermosetting resin, carbonizing and baking the resultant sheet at a prescribed temperature, or above in a nonoxidizing atmosphere. SOLUTION: A sheet prepared by forming a slurry containing 60-95wt.% organic fibers (e.g. rayon fibers) blended therein is impregnated with a thermosetting resin (e.g. a phenol resin), heating the resultant sheet at 150-250 deg.C, contact bonding the sheet under about 5-10kg/cm<2> , reimpregnating the resultant green sheet with the thermosetting resin, carbonizing and baking the sheet at >=800 deg.C in a nonoxidizing atmosphere. The porosity of the green compact is 30-70% and the pore diameter is >=20 and <=80μm. The bending strength is preferably >=50kg/cm<2> . The carbonizing and baking are carried out by sandwiching the green compact between graphitic plates and heating the green compact at about <=10 deg.C/hr heat-up rate to about 800 deg.C. Furthermore, the compact, as necessary, is heated to >=2000 deg.C. |
