PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a highly-reliable magnetic encoder which can achieve a required characteristic without adjustment and can also both reduce the power consumption and mitigate microfabrication conditions of a MR (Magnetoresistance) component. SOLUTION: The magnetic encoder is configured to be provided with a first member 1 which is magnetized with a pitch ofλand a second member 2 arranged facing against the first member 1, being movable relative to the first member, on which a plurality of MR elements for detecting a change of a magnetic field of the first member 1 arising from its relative movement are formed in an array. In this case, MR components 4 on the second member 2 are disposed in such a way that a plurality of sets, each set comprising 4 pieces of the MR components, wherein a phase of each MR component of the set is different by 90 deg. to one another, are arranged in an array and the MR components in each set having the same phase are connected by series connection to form one magnetic detecting element.
