A process for the prepn. of carboxylic acids or the corresp. esters, having (n+1)C by a liq. phase reaction of CO with at least an alcohol having nC, in the presence of a catalytic system based on an iridium cpd. and a halogen promoter. The components of the reaction system are more than 0-10% water, more that 0-10% halogen promoter,2-40% of the ester corresp. to the carboxylic acid and alcohol precursor and sol. iodides in an amt. such that the atomic ratio of iodides to Ir is more than 0-10. The carboxylic acid constitutes the solvent of the reaction.
