The invention relates to a semi-automatic small arm with a breech (5) that c an be displaced between a closed position and an open position along a path of motion of the breech, a magazine (9) that guides bullets by spring power transversely to the path of motion of the breech until they reach said trajectory and a catch (13) which allows the respective first bullet (11) of the magazine (9) to enter the path of motion of the breech only if the breec h (5) is in the open position or close to the open position. The catch is preferably configured as a plate (13) that extends parallel to the path of motion of the breech and that is movable in its direction of extension. Said plate interposes itself between the respective first bullet (11) and the pat h of motion of the breech and retains said bullet (11) until the breech (5) reaches or has almost reached its open position.
