PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an automatic focusing device of a camera capable of acquiring good subject data with high contrast at the time of performing focusing of a photographic lens based on the subject data within an autofocus (AF) area. SOLUTION: The angle of the optical axis of an AF fill-in light source is made adjustable in such a manner that the AF area at an arbitrary subject distance can be irradiated with a light projection spot. At the time of AF searching to perform contrast AF, the angle of the optical axis of the AF fill-in light source is changed in synchronization with the movement of the lens position of the focusing lens such that the light projection spot enters the AF area at the subject distance corresponding to the present lens position of the focusing lens. As a result, the AF area at the subject distance at which the focusing lens focuses is illuminated by the light projection spot from the AF fill-in light source and the good subject data with high contrast can be acquired from the AF area.
