PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optically active vicinaldiamine and a method for producing the compound and to provide Schiff base of a substituted amino acid amide and a method for producing the Schiff base and further to provide an optically active Schiff base of substituted amino acid amide and a method for producing the Schiff base. SOLUTION: The present invention provides the optically active vicinaldiamine and a method for producing the compound. The method for producing the optically active vicinaldiamine comprises reacting the Schiff base of the amino acid amide with an organic halide in the presence of an inorganic base and a quaternary ammonium salt having the structural formula to afford an optically active Schiff base of substituted amino acid amide, hydrolyzing the Schiff base and reacting the resultant product with a metal hydride.
