PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image retrieval system for retrieving an image stored in a computer terminal. SOLUTION: This image retrieval system is provided with: a storage means for storing at least image parts, characteristic information and a plurality of image data; a designation input accepting means for accepting the input of the designation of the image parts; a characteristic information extracting means for extracting the characteristic information corresponding to the accepted designation from the storage means; an image parts extracting means for extracting the image parts from the storage means based on characteristic information; an image compounding means for compounding reference image data based on the combination of the extracted image components for each combination; a composite image selection accepting means for accepting the input of the selection of one or more reference image data by a user from the prepared reference image data; and an image retrieving means for executing the retrieval of image data to be stored in the storage means on the basis of the selected reference image data, and for extracting the target image data.
