PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming device for performing variable length compression to image data in a memory and storing them in the memory as data for output. SOLUTION: A copier 1 is provided with: a read DMA 23 for reading images which are read by a scanner part 2 and stored in a memory 4 on the basis of a descriptor; a write DMA 24 for writing codes into the memory 4; and a compressor control unit 22 for reading a prescribed amount of images from the read DMA 23 in advance between the read and write DMAs 23, 24 and a compressor/decompressor 21 for performing variable length compression to the images to generate codes, storing them in a buffer 25, and delivering the images to the compressor/decompressor 21 in accordance with processing by the compressor/depressor 21. Thus, it is possible to continuously transfer images to the compressor/decompressor 21, to omit software processing among the images, and to code the images continuously in the compressor/decompressor 21.
