PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten the time needed for reading while suppressing the degradation of the quality of images obtained by reading an object. SOLUTION: Irradiation time is set so that the output voltage of a CIS 36 falls in a prescribed appropriate voltage range, the signal interval of SH signals for moving an electric charge from a photodiode 36a and reading it as a voltage value is tentatively set to the signal interval tSH1 of a first candidate, and when the set irradiation time is shorter than the signal interval tSH2 of a second candidate shorter than the first signal interval tSH1, the signal interval of the SH signals is set to the signal interval tSH2. Then, the CIS 36 is controlled so as to shift the electric charge from the photodiode 36a and read it as the voltage value on the basis of the set signal interval of the SH signals, and a red LED 34R, a green LED 34G or a blue LED 34B is controlled so that an original is irradiated with light on the basis of the set irradiation time during the set signal interval of the SH signals.
