PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the problem wherein unwanted charge superposition due to signal charges read and untransferred, which is held in a vertical transfer section, as it is. SOLUTION: All exposure periods (t10-t40) are divided into first and second half portions, signal charges corresponding to a low sensitivity pixel signal are read at a moment in time t20 and used for an output signal, and signal charges, corresponding to a high sensitivity pixel signal, are read at the final timing t40 of electronic all exposure periods and used for an output signal. When exposure and storage are continuing in the second half portion (t20-t40) of all exposure periods, signal charges for a low sensitivity signal read into a vertical CCD at a moment t20 are not stored in the vertical CCD but are line shifted surely until the moment t40, when the high sensitivity pixel signal is read. Such a phenomenon as unwanted charges, e.g. a dark current component, resulting from non-transfer of charges are superimposed on the signal charges read from the sensor section to the vertical CCD, occurs, in neither the low-ensitivity pixel signal nor the high-sensitivity pixel signal.
