A box (2) containing floating fruits or vegetables is emptied by immersion in a liquid filled tank (1). At the side of the tank is a vertical support column (6) on which a carriage (7) is moved by a rack and pinion. The carriage is connected to a handling system (8,9) which can grip and raise a full box in and out of a storage space (4). A full box is lifted from its storage site to a height above the tank, angularly displaced over the tank and then immersed in it. After its contents have floated off the empty box is again raised out of the tank, angularly displaced and lowered into an empty box storage site. The system for emptying fruit boxes occupies little space and is extremely robust.
