PURPOSE: To arrange characters within set line width while maintaining the form of a document even when the characters can not be arranged within the specific line width with compression permissible quantities that the respective characters already have. CONSTITUTION: To arrange characters in a line having previously set line width, the total (sum compress) of compression permissible quantities between the respective characters of the character string to be arranged and the excess quantity (sum tuning) based upon the line width when the character string is arranged at basical character intervals are obtained. Here, when the total of the compression permissible quantities is smaller than the excess quantity, the difference between the excess quantity and the total of the compression permissible quantities is obtained and on the basis of the difference, additional compression quantities to be allotted to the respective characters of the character string are obtained (step S13.1 and step S13.2). Then the compression quantity between characters is determined with the compression permissible quantity and additional compression quantity that the characters have and the characters are arranged (step S13.10). |
