A rotary pump of the roller-vane type comprises a cup-shaped housing 14, Fig. 3, closed by an end plate to form a cylindrical pumping chamber 34 within which a rotor 70 fixed to a driving-shaft 72 eccentrically rotates to pump fluid from one or other (or both) inlets 40a, 40b, Fig. 1, to one or other (or both) outlets 50a, 50b. The inlet and outlet not in use is suitably plugged. The rotor 70 includes a plurality of slots extending radially inwardly from the rotor periphery and the whole width of the rotor. Each slot receives a freely rotatable roller 86 and has a depth equal to the roller diameter and leading and trailing faces 80, 82 angularly disposed with respect to each other with the trailing face substantially along a radial plane of the rotor. It is stated that the shape and size of slot reduces roller wear and pump chatter and eliminates vibration and scuffing and permits the using of materials such as nylon and hard rubber for the rollers. When each roller reaches the 12 o'clock position, Fig. 3, it moves smoothly from engagement by the trailing face 82 to engagement with the leading face 80 under the pressure difference between the pressure and suction sides of the pump with the rotor webs between the slots forming an effective seal since the roller diameter equals the slot depth. As shown, the angle between the leading and trailing faces is between 35 degrees and 45 degrees, preferably 45 degrees. In another embodiment, this angle is between 15 degrees and 25 degrees, preferably 20 degrees, with both the leading and trailing faces disposed in radial planes of the rotor. Bottom studs 26 enabling the cover to be secured to the housing 14 are lengthened to permit of the screwing on of further nuts to mount the pump. |
