1299185 Indicating vehicle speed R M McCLELLAN Snr and R M McCLELLAN Jnr 22 Dec 1969 [23 Dec 1968] 62424/69 Heading G4H A vehicle has a speed indicating system using an electronic encoder controlling lamps to give an externally (to the vehicle) visible coded indication of the speed of the vehicle. A Bowden cable connected through a gear system 13 to the vehicle's wheels is used to generate pulses at 14 e.g. by rotating a magnet in the vicinity of a coil. The pulses are counted for a set period. The output of the counter 15 being used to generate a signal in binary or random code by means of decode matrix 35. The coded signals are used to control the lamps which are on the top of the vehicle in such a manner that the pattern of lights indicates the vehicle's speed. If the vehicle exceeds the speed limit set either by the driver, or unit 40, or by means of a control computer and radio transmitter, (the vehicle having a receiver), the lamps are made to flash. In a second embodiment, the drive to the wheel operates an angular rotation to D.C. converter (50), Fig. 7 (not shown), which in turn feeds a series of comparators (52)-(59) the outputs of which are fed to decode matrix (60). Both embodiments are provided with calibration systems.
