A fluid fuel fired crucible furnace 2 comprises a partition 4 formed with an aperture 7 and disposed horizontally between the crucible 1 and the furnace lining 3 to form chambers 5 and 6, and a vertical partition shown in dotted lines. A main burner 9 is disposed in chamber 5 and an auxiliary burner 10 in chamber 6. More than one burner may be used in either chamber and the main burner(s) may be in chamber 6 with the flue 11 leading from chamber 5. More than one partition 4, each with aperture 7, may be used. |
