Preparation of alkali, particularly sodium, trimetaphosphates free from water insoluble polyphosphates, by rapid heating up to ca. 500 degrees C of a mixture of mono-alkali orthophosphate and monoalkali phosphite, 10 - 50% (pref. 20 - 40%) of the total phosphorus being added is phosphite. Preferred is a Na : P proportion of 1.00.
