A remotely operated machine for supplying bolts 4 to recesses 3 in a pair of flanges 1, 2, and then tightening up their nuts 8, comprises a frame 10, two magazines 15 for holding the assembled nuts and bolts, two pivoting levers 16 for moving the bottom bolts out of the magazines and into the recesses 3, and two nut runners 26, each of which can be driven when pinions 24 are brought into engagement with pinions 25 forming part of the nut runners. Pinions 24 are mounted on arms 22 which also carry electric motors 23 for driving the pinions, and the arms are pivoted about a shaft 21. The bottom flange 1 is fixed to a polygonal base 5 and fins 6 for holding the bolts against rotation during tightening or slackening of nuts 8 are provided. Levers 16 are pivoted by arms 17 actuated through a bar 19 by an electromagnet 20, and arms 22 are pivoted by a bar 31. In operation, a plate 30 of the machine is gripped by a remote manipulator and guideways 11 of the machine are engaged with the polygonal base 5. Electromagnet 20 is engaged and levers 16 move the bolts into the recesses 3. Lifting bar 31 is remotely actuated so that plates 22 pivot and engage pinions 24, 25, and a cam 27 releases a microswitch 29, so that current is supplied to motors 23. Torque limiting devices are fitted to the motors, and each of the pairs of nuts and bolts are tightened in two stages. The operations are controlled by means of push buttons and ammeters at a control desk. |
