The alloy has the compn. 40-75%; Si, 5-20% Mg, 4-12% Ba, 0.3-1.2% B, balance Fe and impurities such as Ca and Al 2.5%, and in which the wt. ratio of Mg: B is 15-25 and of Mg-Ba 1-3. The alloy contains in addition-N at a ratio 0 N: B 2 in order to form a B nitride. The N content is obtained pref. by blowing N into the molten alloy.
