A polymerization initiator comprises, in combination (1) an oxidizing agent, (2) a chelate compound of a metal of Group IB, IIB, IV B , VI B , VII B , III A , IV A , V A , or VIII of the Periodic Table with an at least bidentate ligand, in which compound the metal is still capable of accepting one or more electron pairs from an electron donor, and (3) an electron donor, different from said ligand, in an amount at most equal to that required to complex completely the metal of the chelate compound. Periodic Table referred to is in " Handbook of Chemistry and Physics, 45th Edition." The oxidizing agent may be a peroxy or hydroperoxy compound, a persalt, or an oxazirane. The Specification contains extensive lists of chelate compounds and electron donor compounds. Examples of bidentate chelate compounds are ferrous, vanadyl, dichlorotitanium, diethyl tin, cupric, and ethoxy-aluminium acetylacetonate, vanadyl methylacetyl acetonate, vanadyl 2-acetylcyclohexanate, vanadyl heptanedionate, vanadyl propionylacetaldehydrate, vanadyl benzoylacetaldehydrate, dichlorotitanium acetylacetonate, diethyl - tin acetylacetonate, cupric acetylacetonate, vanadyl salicylaldehydrate, vanadyl - bis- (acetylacetamide), vanadyl - bis - (acetylacetanilide), vanadyl thioglycollate, vanadyl anthranilate, ethoxyaluminium acetylacetonate, and vanadyl alpha-formylcyclohexanonate. Examples of tridentate ligands are 2,6-bis- (alpha - pyridyl) - pyridine, and 2 - (alphapyridylmethyleneaminomethyl) - pyridine. Bisbenzoylacetonepropylenediimine is the example of a tetradentate ligand. Component (3) of the catalyst may be selected from monoamines, monoalcohols, ethers, aldehydes, imines, ketones, amides, sulphur compounds and phosphorus compounds such as hexamethylphosphotriamide. The initiators are used for polymerizing ethylenically unsaturated monomers in bulk, in solution, in emulsion, or in suspension, and if desired, at low temperatures. Exemplified polymers are polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl - pyrrolidone, polyethylene, polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl benzoate, polyacrylonitrile, polyvinylidene chloride, polybut - 3 - en - 2 - one, copolymers of propylene and vinyl acetate, vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate, ethylene and vinyl acetate, and propylene and vinyl chloride. |
