Materials which are resilient and have a low coefficient of friction, dimensional stability and are suitable for pump glands operating at high temperature are formed from a braided core of impregnated fibres. The fibres are made from glass, or silicon dioxide. When glass fibres are used the packing is resistant to temperatures up to 1200 degrees F and silicon dioxide packings resist temperatures up to 200 degrees F. The core is impregnated with molybdenum disulphide and the braiding can be coated with MOS2 and/or have a braided graphite jacket.
