A high molecular weight condensation polymer is made by subjecting a linear condensation polymer, or a monomer which may be polymerized to give the linear condensation polymer, in the form of pressed objects of fine-grained material of particle diameter below 2 mm. to solid-state condensation under reduced pressure or in an inert gas atmosphere. The pressed objects may contain one or more solid or liquid, chemically inert or reactive additives. The starting material may be a linear polyester, such as polyethylene terephthalate, a polyamide, such as nylon 6 or nylon 66 or the monomer for making the polyamides. The process may be operated continuously when the pressed objects are in the form of an endless band. If a volatile substance which evaporates during condensation is added before pressing, the pressed object attains a honeycomb structure.</p> |
