Matrix printer has the continuous paper web passing with its perforated edges through two drive units whose separation can be varied to accommodate different widths of paper. A lever attached to one of the tractors is swivable about a bolt (28) near to one lever end carries below it a feeler (17) which with the aid of spring pressure rests against the paper web (7). A tiltable control strip (24) positioned parallel to the printing bar is swivable about one of its longitudinal edges and is located on the other side of the paper web opposite the feeler. When paper is present the strip is held parallel to the feeler and web by a spring-loaded lever (26) on a machine switch (25).
