The lift speed control system uses a braking signal generated by a stationary emitter to initiate the halting operation, the travel speed being altered in accordance with a predetermined curve. The actual value of the travel speed on the occasion of the brake signal occurring is compared with the desired value after rounding the curve representing the desired value. If it is greater than or equal to the desired value, the speed is not altered until conditions occur where the distance to be covered to the stopping point can be determined by a formula taking into account the integral of the travel speed over the time period, and the distance travelled from starting to round the desired value curve to the stopping point. Where the actual value is less, the formula determining when speed alteration is to take place takes account of the integral, the distance travelled when rounding the curve, the travel speed and the deceleration defined by the section of the desired-value curve next to the rounded portion.
