A self-contained cooking unit is designed to provide cooking without the problems of burning at the interface between the heated surface and the food. The container (3) is manufactured in ceramic with an internal glazed surface (2) and the outer surface is shrouded by a heating jacket (6) carrying two electrodes (25, 26). The container locates in a moulded plastic housing (10), with an internal reflecting surface (30). A bolt and clasp (14, 17) secures the cooking container to the housing. The housing contains a power socket (13) on one side and a heating level selector switch on the other side (12). A glass cover (8) completes the unit.
