Prodn. of organo-Mg complexes (I), which are soluble in hydrocarbons, of the formula (R2Mg)m.(R3Al, R'3Al)n (where R is 1-25, (1-8)C prim. alkyl or phenyl or mixts. of these; R' is 1-4C alkyl; m/n is not 0.5, pref. 0.5-10) is carried out by (a) reacting Mg with a prim. halide of the formula RX' (where X' is Cl, Br or I) at 20-200 (60-100) degrees C using 1-20 mole Mg/mole RX'; and (b) adding Al and then an alkyl halide in the formula R'X (where X is Cl, Br or I, exp. Cl). (I) contain normally insol. lower alkyl Mg cpds., which are useful as cocatalysts in the polymerisation of olefins (e.g. C2H4, C3H6, in conjunction with TiCl4) and dienes (e.g. 1,3-butadiene and 2-methyl-1,3-butadiene, in conjunction with TiI4). They are free from undesirable contamination with halides and are completely free from ether.
