The agitator for homogenising the liquid contents such as petroleum in a storage tank, is installed in the floating roof; the driving shaft passing vertically through a stuffing box. In the case of tanks which are emptied completely at times, the motor and transmission are mounted on a platform from which >=3 vertical tubes project downwards through glands and shutting boxes to protect the blades or vanes from damage by resting on the tank bottom and lifting the screw and driving shaft clear. The arrangement is partic. suited to tanks which are partly buried, and makes possible the use of screws working efficiently whilst requiring much less energy.
