The system is used for supporting a set of steps or stair tread for a staircase. It includes a number of vertical structural elements which consist of tubes with a circular cross-section. The tubes fit through holes in the horizontal members. The bottom ends of the vertical tubes rest in depressions in the bottom portion of each horizontal member. There are no bulges or depressions in the top surfaces of the horizontal members. The horizontal members are tubular. They are connected to the vertical members by welding, and the open ends of the horizontal tubular members are then plugged.
